Like many others who’ve moved to the Duluth area, Boyd Maranell was lured by the natural beauty and the vibrancy of the community. After years of visiting friends and family in the Duluth area, he could no longer resist the urge to move north. Rice Lake Gardens opened in 2011 and initially offered vegetables, herbs, and annuals along with a weekly farmers market.

Fourteen years later, the garden center has grown from a one-man operation with two greenhouses and 2,000 square feet to a dozen employees with nine greenhouses and 24,000 square feet. Perennials were introduced in 2019, succulents in 2021, and house plants in 2023.
